Kidney: Juxtaglomerular Apparatus

• regulates blood pressure and filtration rate

Juxtaglomerular cells (JG cells)

• Specialized smooth muscle cells with granular cytoplasm

• Renin production, increase blood pressure

Macula densa

• Consists of modified DCT cells, which are taller and have

larger more prominent nuclei than adjacent cells.

• Detect sodium concentration of fluid in the tubule

• In response to elevated sodium level, macula densa cells

trigger contraction of the afferent arteriole, reducing flow of

blood to glomerulus and glomerular filtration rate.

Lacis cells or Extraglomerular mesangial cells

• Secrete erythropoietin
